Rufus is only available to approved 501C rescue groups at this time. The following is a synopsis of his history, temperament, and needs!

History: Rufus was trapped by Lost Animal Resource Group following some social media tags about him being sighted in the area and possibly needing help. LARG transferred him to HSHC through AC, and both agencies said Rufus was very sweet with them.

Temperament at Shelter: Rufus was very fearful and shy upon arrival to HSHC; but as soon as his sweet little smile started to come out, our dog team couldn't help but fall in love! They started working with him right away, and have really helped him to gain more confidence daily. He still has some quirks! He acts like a goof in his kennel - running away when strangers approach & checking back every minute or so while he decides if he wants to be friends. He also investigates new people outside the kennel, taking a cautious pause and giving a quick sniff of the hand to say hello. Following the introductions, he relaxes and starts to let Rufus shine through!

Rufus bonded with some dogs at the shelter and demonstrates a more confident and playful side when around them. He definably seems to be more of a ladies man, and one of his best pals is a dog named Evie (see video). It is not clear what his experience with other dogs it, but he does seem to set boundaries. In example, Evie tried to drink out of a bowl while he was drinking water from it. He gave her a little warning. It was nothing alarming; no bite was attempted; and the two dogs even continued to play and interact following the correction. He has also reacted less positively to some of our higher energy male dogs. Rufus again just gave a quick warning that he did not want to play and then moved on. We aren't quite sure if that reaction was because he was just neutered; the energy level of the other dogs was high for his liking; he just needs more socialization; or a combination of all three!

Overall, Rufus seems to like people and other dogs, but would likely benefit from an experienced handler who will help him gain confidence and experience socializing with dogs and people!

Medical Concerns: When Rufus arrived, our vet team noted he was pretty unkempt and slightly underweight, but TLC seems to be helping with those! Our vet noted mild tarter during her exam, but nothing requiring a dental at this time!
