If I were human, I might be called "a late bloomer". I'm quite shy, you see. I'm a beautiful girl named Shirl. I was a new mother who came to the shelter after I was found in NW Rochester in early October of 2025 with my four young kittens. Because my babies were so young and were dependent on me, we all went to a foster home. Our foster mom named us for her best friends from childhood, which is how I got my name, Shirl. I was very frightened when I first returned to the shelter. All my kittens have been adopted, but because I have been so cautious around people, I have been here for nearly a year. I've been known to like lounging in high places, staying out of the fray. But I'm becoming braver being around people, and I've come a long way since I first came here. There is a woman who volunteers here who is very patient with me. I think she might be a "cat whisperer." I let her pet me on my head and tail, but I am not comfortable with my back being petted. I will back away if the petting gets to be too much. We play with a wand toy together. If this person is in the room or other people that I know, I stay out and about in the room. When strangers come in, I will often go up on the high shelves. I am not aggressive, and if I do become frightened, I may swat, but I do not extend my claws. I'm a good eater, and I don't cause trouble. I don't mind the other cats, and I feel comfortable with Licorice and Willow. I will sometimes rub against Supra and Boxter, who are older kittens. So, I can probably do okay in a home with other cats. I'm a very sweet girl who's waiting for a special person, someone who "knows cats", like some of the people here at the shelter, someone who will be my forever person. Approach slowly, sit with me, reach out gently, and quietly say my name, "Shirl, be my sweet girl."
