Meet Open Mic Night, also known as Iris by her foster family. She is a sweet and gentle 42-pound girl who is just beginning to discover what it means to feel safe and loved. She came to BARCS through no fault of her own, and while we're still learning about her past, one thing is already clear: Iris has a loving heart and a serious talent for snuggling!

Iris was shy and cautious when she first arrived in her foster home, but she has shown a remarkable willingness to trust her new people. Despite only knowing her foster parents for a short time, she has happily leaned in for pets, snuggled up beside them on the couch, and even fallen asleep with her head resting in her foster's lap. She enjoys being close to her humans and seems happiest when she knows someone is nearby. This affectionate girl is looking for a patient family who will let her settle in at her own pace and show her that the world can be a kind place.

Iris is still finding her confidence and can be startled by sudden movements and unfamiliar noises. Exploring her new yard has been a cautious adventure, and barking dogs in the neighborhood have made her nervous. She may cry when she can't see her people, especially when she's in her crate, but she can settle with reassurance. She responds best to gentle encouragement, treats, and a patient approach, as she can be sensitive to corrections. Her trust is something special, and she deserves a family who will continue nurturing it.

This little sweetheart has a playful side, too! She loves her Kong stuffed with peanut butter and enjoys chewing on stuffed animal toys. When she gets excited, she can become a little mouthy or chew on nearby items, such as clothing or bedding, but she has been easy to redirect with a calm voice or an appropriate toy. She is beginning to build positive associations with her crate using treats and her leash, and she'll benefit from continued gentle guidance as she learns the ropes of home life.

Iris has been an easy companion to handle on leash, responding to light leash pressure and sweet talk to help guide her. However, she is currently dealing with painful, swollen paws that have made walking uncomfortable, so her foster family has been keeping activity limited and carrying her when needed. As she heals, she'll need time to rest and recover before she can fully enjoy walks and other adventures.

Iris is still learning about housetraining, and she has had several accidents in her foster home as she is getting used to her new routine. She'll need patience, a consistent potty routine, and understanding while she settles in.

Iris is already making a lovely impression with the resident cats in her foster home. She has shown little interest in the two cats she lives with, occasionally glancing over when one approaches the baby gate. She has been described as happy, playful, and social, and she has interacted nicely with small dogs. She previously lived with children between 12 and 18 years old.

Iris is a tenderhearted girl with so much love to give. She may need extra time, patience, and support as she recovers physically and gains confidence, but she is already showing how deeply she wants to connect with people.

If you're looking for a devoted little companion who loves cuddles, Kongs, and being close to her favorite humans, Iris could be a wonderful addition to your family. Please complete an application and email dogfosters@barcs.org if you would like to meet her!
