Meet Snowball, a sweet and sensitive girl who is learning that people can be trusted and that the world can be a safe place. This beautiful girl can be nervous around new people and unfamiliar situations, but underneath her uncertainty is a gentle sweetheart who is slowly beginning to let her guard down. Snowball isn't the kind of dog who will immediately greet everyone with a wagging tail. She needs time, patience, and the freedom to approach people on her own terms. The wonderful news is that she's becoming more comfortable with her foster family every day, and her affectionate side is finally starting to shine!

One of Snowball's sweetest milestones is that she's started hopping onto the sofa to sit with her foster mom and snuggle while watching TV. It's something she wouldn't do before, and it's a lovely sign of how much more comfortable she's becoming. She's learning that home can be a place to relax, enjoy companionship, and let her guard down. She's also working on her manners and is getting better about keeping all four paws on the floor when she's excited about a treat. She's even learning to sit, and while she doesn't get it right every time just yet, she's beginning to understand the idea!

Snowball has plenty of energy and enjoys having opportunities to run and play. Her foster family recently discovered that she enjoys chasing a tennis ball in the backyard, even though she wasn't interested in it in the past. She also enjoys food puzzles filled with kibble, which give her something fun to work on while exercising her busy brain. She'll benefit from appropriate physical exercise and mental enrichment, along with a predictable routine that helps her feel safe. Since she has lots of energy to burn, her future adopter will need to find ways to meet her exercise needs while keeping outings manageable and enjoyable.

Snowball's leash skills are still a work in progress. She can pull strongly and becomes reactive when she sees other dogs, sometimes barking and expressing her big feelings when they're nearby. She generally does better in quieter environments with fewer people and animals, and she can settle once a trigger is out of sight. Snowball will need an adopter who can maintain a comfortable distance from triggers, use positive-reinforcement techniques, and help her build confidence without pushing her beyond what she can handle.

Snowball has a strong prey drive toward cats and small animals and is extremely reactive around her foster family's resident cat. She runs toward the room where the cat is kept when she hears the door open, hoping for an opportunity to get inside. For everyone's safety, Snowball needs a home without cats or other small animals. She has met other dogs at BARCS and has done best with gentle, respectful canine companions. She requests to meet any resident dogs to ensure they're a good match.

Snowball hasn't had any new interactions with visitors inside the home this week, but she seems comfortable around people she encounters on the street when they give her space. Her foster family doesn't allow strangers to approach or pet her, which helps keep interactions low-pressure while she continues building confidence. She has had some positive experiences with children in the past, including allowing a couple of children to gently pet her at an adoption event, although she was still hesitant and initially backed toward her foster family. She has also calmly watched children playing outside from a distance. Any future interactions with children should be carefully managed, with an emphasis on respecting her boundaries and allowing her to choose whether to approach.

Snowball is making lovely progress with her housetraining. She has even started going to the door a couple of times, suggesting she's beginning to understand how to communicate when she needs to go outside. A consistent schedule, regular potty breaks, and praise for going outdoors will help her continue building on this success. She's also comfortable entering her crate and does well when left alone for the two to three hours her foster family has needed to be away. Her foster family has found ways to administer her medication without making it stressful for her, and the growing trust between them has made everyday care easier.

Snowball is a special girl for someone who understands that trust isn't built overnight. She's already shown that she can settle into a foster home, relax on the sofa with someone she trusts, enjoy cuddles, learn new skills, and discover new activities that bring her happiness. She isn't looking for someone to rush her into being a social butterfly. She needs a patient, understanding adopter who will celebrate her small victories, respect her boundaries, and give her the time she needs to feel secure.

Snowball would do best with an adopter who can provide a predictable routine, appropriate exercise, mental enrichment, and continued positive-reinforcement training. With patience, consistency, and the freedom to move at her own pace, Snowball has every opportunity to keep blossoming into a more confident companion. Watching her discover the joys of home and companionship has already been rewarding, and there's so much more for this sweet girl to discover.

Snowball is currently in the comfort of a foster home. If you're interested in meeting her, please complete an adoption application and email dogfosters@barcs.org for next steps!
