Meet Mystique, affectionately known as Misty, a sweet senior lady who believes life is best lived with her nose to the ground and a human by her side. At around 37 pounds, this affectionate girl may be older and mostly blind, but she certainly hasn't let that slow her down! She's a joyful, energetic dog with a huge heart, a serious talent for snuggling, and an eagerness to explore the world alongside someone she trusts. After spending time in a foster home, Mystique is hoping to find a family who will give her the love, patience, and security she deserves.

Mystique absolutely adores people and seems to believe everyone she meets is a new best friend. She happily wags her tail when someone approaches and loves getting pets from new acquaintances. Once she feels comfortable with you, her affectionate personality really shines. She'll rub her head and body against you to request attention, leaning into your touch as if she simply can't get close enough. Her foster describes her as a super-duper snuggle bug who thrives on physical contact. She may have plenty of pep when it's time to explore, but once she's settled in, her relaxed side comes out, and she's more than happy to spend quality time close to her favorite humans.

When it comes to cuddling, Mystique takes her job very seriously. She would happily curl up in your lap while you work, snooze beside you, or find a cozy spot where she can stay connected to her people. During a previous foster stay, she even slept under the covers at her foster family's feet! She has a funny habit of positioning herself wherever her people happen to be and may occasionally snore during a particularly good nap. She also enjoys tug toys, giving her a playful side to balance out all those snuggles. At around an 8-out-of-10 energy level according to her latest foster, Mystique still has plenty of enthusiasm for life and will appreciate opportunities to explore as well as time to relax with her family.

Despite being mostly blind, Mystique navigates the world with impressive determination and is a quick learner when given clear guidance. She initially pulled hard and rushed forward during walks, but after just a few days of loose-leash practice, she made wonderful progress and began spending most of her walks moving at a much more relaxed pace. She benefits from having her handler close by and guiding her confidently, so she can better understand where she's going and avoid bumping into obstacles. Because of her limited vision, a consistent walking routine and gentle, clear communication will help her feel secure as she explores.

Mystique is also learning helpful cues to make everyday life safer and easier. She's been practicing "down" and working on loose-leash walking, and her foster recommends continuing to reinforce "up" and "down" to help her navigate stairs. Teaching her to pause and wait before going through doors or starting meals can also help her develop impulse control rather than rushing forward with excitement. She's already shown that she can pick up new expectations quickly, so training can be a rewarding way to build trust and communication with her. She'll do best with a confident, patient person who can help her navigate unfamiliar spaces while allowing her to enjoy her independence.

Mystique has been wonderful with housetraining, with no accidents during her recent foster stay. She also made excellent progress with being left alone. At first, she would whine for a few minutes after her foster left before eventually settling down to rest. After about three days, she stopped whining altogether and was able to remain calm and quiet on her own. It's lovely to see how quickly she adjusted to this part of her routine! A predictable environment and consistent schedule will help her continue to feel comfortable in her future home.

Mystique has experience with children, including kids ages 8 and 13 during a previous foster stay, and has shown that she enjoys friendly human company. Given her limited vision and enthusiasm when greeting people, respectful children who understand how to interact gently with a senior dog would be the best fit. She has also enjoyed positive interactions with gentle, respectful dogs at BARCS and has previously done well around small-breed dogs. Her comfort with individual dogs may vary, so any potential canine sibling should meet her to ensure they're a good match.

Mystique is a loving, spirited, and surprisingly quick-learning companion who has so much affection left to give. She'll thrive with a family who appreciates her joyful personality, helps her navigate the world safely, and understands that clear guidance can make all the difference for a dog with limited vision. In return, she'll offer enthusiastic greetings, playful tug sessions, happy tail wags, and enough snuggles to fill your days. If you're looking for a devoted companion who can enjoy an adventure and then happily curl up beside you, Mystique might be your girl!

MVP Up to Bat! I'm a BARCS MVP because I'm working on my leash skills. Treats help, and so does a loose leash for guidance, since I'm mostly blind. I've done just fine with calm, polite pups in low-key settings. I'll just need to meet any potential doggie roommate first to make sure we click!

Every animal deserves a home run! BARCS MVPs are overlooked pets in the shelter. Thanks to the generous support of the Alonso, Basallo, and Bradish Baltimore Orioles families, all MVP animals have waived adoption fees AND will go home with a brand new leash and collar or cat carrier.
