Meet Santos! He walks very well on a leash, and generally walks right beside you. He is a little shy initially, but opens up in no time once he is out and away from the loud kennels. He has not been reactive to all the other dogs out and about. Once he knows that you are his friend he enjoys pets and treats. Santos is on the smaller side at 41 pounds.
Santos has been on several Dog's Day Out adventures, including visits to Fort McHenry exploring Locust Point, stopping by Petco, and spending time relaxing at a volunteer's home. During his outings, he loved running around in the fenced yard and had a great time playing a fun game of "keep away." Volunteers described Santos as calm and lovable. He enjoys being pet, going for walks, and spending time with his people. Santos is a sweet companion who clearly enjoys both playtime and affection.
Santos recently spent time in a foster home, where he has been slowly settling in and showing just how sweet and lovable he is. Like many dogs transitioning into a home environment, Santos needed a little time to feel safe-but once he did, his personality began to shine.
Santos worked on his house training and did well overall. He improved day by day with routine and consistency. Most pups need a little bit of time to adjust to a new home and a new routine and he did great! In the home, he was kept separated from a resident dog using crates and designated spaces. While he was initially nervous and unsure, Santos has made great progress over just a few days. He has become more comfortable, more playful, and more confident-clear signs that he's learning to trust and feel secure.
Due to winter weather, Santos didn't go on traditional leash walks, but he enjoyed spending time in a large fenced yard, which he absolutely loved. Having a safe outdoor space to explore and decompress was clearly beneficial for him. Santos met a new adult in the home and was friendly and comfortable, treating her just like his foster-warm, gentle, and affectionate. He enjoys being close to his people and definitely loves snuggling. His favorite activities include chewing on bones and relaxing near his humans.
Santos has experience with kids and would prefer a home without them, as he's happiest in the company of adult humans. He's a very lovable dog who will thrive with a family willing to offer understanding, structure, and time. In the right home, Santos has so much room to keep blossoming.
Santos has met other dog pals at BARCS, he is still getting the hang of play, but is able to coexist nicely with his friends. He has interacted politely with small breed dogs.

I'm a VIP because I'm still learning, and the shelter can be a tough place for dogs like me to shine. But I've got a whole team cheering me on!
Here are a few things the staff and volunteers are helping me with:
· Santos would do best in a home without kids, as their energy can be overstimulating for him.
If you're patient and open-hearted, I could be your best friend. I'm available for either adoption or foster-both will help me tremendously! When you visit, a staff member can walk you through what's been working for me and how you can keep the progress going at home.
