Bernice is a quiet, tender-hearted girl who's been through more than we'll ever know-but day by day, she's finding her way forward with courage and grace. Now safe in a loving foster home, Bernice is slowly emerging from her shell and showing glimpses of the sweet personality tucked beneath her shy exterior.
Naturally docile and reserved, Bernice spends most of her day tucked away in a cozy corner or nestled on the bed she's claimed as her own. But recently, her foster has witnessed beautiful signs of progress. On the Fourth of July, rattled by the neighborhood fireworks, Bernice made a brave leap-right onto her foster's bed for comfort. Since then, it's become her new favorite place, a quiet sign that she's beginning to seek connection and security.
She doesn't ask for much-just a calm, predictable environment, a soft spot to rest, and someone who understands the importance of patience. Bernice has recently started enjoying gentle snuggles at night and will now take cheese from her foster's hand, a small but powerful gesture of growing trust.
While Bernice doesn't yet play with toys and prefers not to be pushed beyond her comfort zone, she's beginning to enjoy some freedom in the fenced yard-prancing, exploring, and then darting back inside to recharge. She's fully housebroken and slowly improving on leash, though walks in unfamiliar areas are still a work in progress.
Bernice gets along with the resident dog and is starting to show mild interest in canine companionship. She's also lived peacefully around cats and doesn't react to squirrels-just a calm presence all around. Though she hasn't lived with children in foster care, she hasn't shown any aggression to people and would likely do best in a quiet home without young kids.
Bernice's ideal adopter will be someone who sees her for who she is-a sensitive, gentle girl who just needs time and space to feel safe. A secure outdoor area would be a bonus, as she's starting to gain confidence exploring the yard. Most importantly, she needs someone who will let her set the pace and celebrate her quiet milestones.
If you believe in the power of patience and the beauty of a slow bloom, Bernice may be your perfect match. Bernice is currently in a foster home. To learn more or schedule a meet-and-greet, please email dogfosters@barcs.org to be connected with her foster family.
