Meet Calhan (Poe)! At 8 years old and 88 pounds, this handsome, beefy boy is a total gentle giant with a heart as big as he is. Poe is an affectionate, easygoing guy who loves being close to his people and has fully embraced his role as an oversized lap dog. He has a wonderful balance of playful energy and relaxed companionship, and lately, he's been showing off an increasingly active and playful side!
Poe is spending time in a foster home and has been a wonderful houseguest. He is completely housetrained and has had no accidents. He also does great when left alone, relaxing comfortably while his foster is away. He's learned to go into his crate when his foster calls him, walking right inside like a pro! At home, Poe enjoys following his people around and finding opportunities to snuggle. Personal space? He's not entirely convinced that applies to him. This big boy genuinely believes he belongs in your lap!
Poe has been enjoying his newfound bursts of energy and loves playing with balls, rope toys, and chew toys. One of his funniest habits is rolling around on the grass and carpet, which seems to be his own oversized version of the zoomies. His foster dog sister, Rousey, knows that when Poe starts rolling around, playtime might be coming! He also enjoys spending time outside, sniffing and exploring, and getting out for his daily walks.
Poe is a great companion for outings and adventures. He previously attended a Wednesday night food truck event filled with people, food, noise, and activity, and he handled it like a pro. He regularly encounters families and other dogs on his walks, and he continues to enjoy getting out into the world with his foster. He can pull at the beginning of a walk because he's excited to get going, but he's improving and learning to settle into a better walking rhythm.
Poe absolutely loves people and has been wonderful with children. He has enjoyed meeting families during outings and has previously spent time with children at busy social gatherings. He's a friendly, affectionate guy who seems happiest when he can be near his favorite humans. He may occasionally surprise you with a bark, too! His foster recently heard him bark when someone outside was making noise early one morning, proving that even this easygoing gentleman has his moments as a neighborhood watchman.
Poe also has a lovely relationship with his foster dog sister, Rousey. The two get along wonderfully, sharing cuddles, naps, and playtime. Poe has met other dogs at BARCS and does best with polite, gentle canine friends. His experience living with Rousey shows that he can enjoy having another dog around, provided they're a good match.
Poe is food motivated and enjoys tasty treats, including sliced apples, and continues to learn through everyday life with his foster family. He's a smart boy who is making great progress with his routine, including going into his crate when called.
Whether he's rolling around on the carpet, playing with his favorite ball, enjoying a walk, cuddling with Rousey, or squeezing his 88-pound self into your lap, Poe makes everyday life a little more fun. He's affectionate, social, playful, and wonderfully easygoing, with a big personality to match his big body.
