Hi, I'm Roku, a 79-pound American White Shepherd mix, and yes-I'm a big boy with a big presence and an even bigger heart waiting for the right person. Right now I'm very on edge in this environment, pretty skittish, and I like to keep to myself, so when I meet new people I may bark and act defensive, especially if there are fast movements or someone reaches for me too quickly-I really need slow, calm introductions and my space respected. What I do love is food, especially wet food, and I have a serious soft spot for whipped cream, though I can be a little picky about treats. I absolutely love being outside and exploring, so sometimes it's hard to convince me to come back in because the world out there is just too interesting. Apartment living would not be a good fit for me-I'm simply too big, small spaces make me anxious, and I need room to move, explore, and burn off energy at my own pace. It's going to take time, patience, and commitment for me to truly warm up, but once I do, I show my affection in my own special way by rubbing my body against you and leaning in hard for those glorious butt scratches. I'm still very independent and enjoy doing my own thing, but don't let that fool you-I'm incredibly loving, deeply loyal, and I'd make an excellent alert dog since I'm always listening and even tilt my head at funny or unfamiliar sounds. I'm a wonderful dog who just needs someone willing to put in the time and energy to help me feel safe, build trust, and blossom into the confident companion I know I can be, and if you're that person, I promise the bond we build will be something truly special.
My adoption fee of $225+tax covers the cost of my care and stay here at the humane society.
All Pennington County residents must also pay an additional $8 licensing fee at time of adoption.
