Bernie is a strong dog on leash and would benefit from continued training to develop polite walking skills and build confidence in new situations. In the kennel environment he can be reactive to other dogs and has shown resource guarding behaviors around other dogs (but not with people). Because of this, he'll do best with patient, experienced handling and positive reinforcement as he learns calmer responses and appropriate social skills.
He may be a little shy around men at first, but Bernie warms up quickly - especially when treats are involved! He's very food motivated, takes treats gently, and enjoys working for rewards, which makes training both productive and fun.
Bernie is looking for an experienced, adult-only home. His size, strength, and enthusiasm may be overwhelming for young children, and he will need a home without small animals. With structure, consistency, and ongoing training, Bernie has all the tools to become a loyal, loving, and devoted companion.
