Update from Danny's Advocate: Danny and I spent some time away from the Animal Shelter on a beautiful Tuesday afternoon. We first headed to Sandy Creek Park where we checked in to one of the private dog parks, played lots of FETCH, walked around the park, and laid in the sun. We then went to Memorial Park to practice leash walking on the path around the lake and, hopefully, observe Danny around other dogs outside of the shelter environment. Lastly, we visited the eastside Lowe's to give Danny a chance to walk inside among a group of people.

My takeaways from an afternoon with Danny:

He was great around the other dogs at Memorial Park. We encountered several groups of dogs walking at the lake. At one point, we were near 6 other dogs as the paths intersected near the bridge and Danny hardly flinched. He was interested and looked at the dogs, but remained centered, showing no aggression or fear.

Danny walked very well on a leash going to and from the Sandy Creek dog park, around the lake at Memorial Park, and throughout Lowe's. He rarely pulled or strayed from my side and responded to gentle corrections. He appears to have had some leash training.

He interacted well with people. Several Lowe's employees noticed Danny's "Adopt Me" cape and made a point to say, "Hello". He responded appropriately to all, took treats gently, and performed a SIT and SHAKE when requested. He was quite the popular boy.

Danny seems to lack public socialization. He was a little uneasy inside Lowe's. He backed away from the automatic doors, kept looking around the corners of the aisles, and seemed unsure in that environment. He was also uneasy when we first arrived at Memorial Park and crouched a little as we started walking. He recovered at Lowe's and Memorial Park and seemed to get more comfortable as we walked.

Overall, I was WOWED by Danny's behavior and thoroughly enjoyed time with him. He jumped right in the backseat of my car and was a good passenger. He was a good companion as we spent time in the dog park and on other adventures. I would be comfortable taking Danny just about anywhere.

From Danny's advocate: Danny was understandably not a happy pup when he arrived at the shelter several months ago. He was grumpy, unfriendly, and didn't want to share tennis balls or other toys. He slowly warmed up to me as we spent time together and we now have a great time playing FETCH, practicing commands, leash walking and just hanging out. His love for FETCH is noteworthy considering how he guarded tennis balls earlier, but now willingly drops the ball so I can throw it again and constantly wags his tail.
Danny walks very well on a leash, sits on command, shakes, downs and is overall a very enjoyable dog. I have seen no dog aggression from Danny as we've walked around the shelter or interacted in the outdoor pens. He enjoys learning and is eager to please.
