Heidi is a shy girl who has warmed up a few of the volunteers at National Mill Dog Rescue who she has gotten to know well. She wags her tail when she is excited to see her favorite people. Heidi is an escape artist and a major flight risk. For this reason, we do require that she go to a home with at least a six-foot privacy fence. Unfortunately, when Heidi arrived to us, she tested positive for heartworm. While she is ready to go home, she will require an adopter local to Colorado Springs so that we can continue her heartworm treatments. Heartworms can be successfully treated with no ill effect to her long term prognosis or quality of life. Dogs who are being treated for heartworm should have limited activity. If you would love to give Heidi a life of love and activity (once her heartworm treatments are over!) please fill out an adoption application at

Prior to being rescued, many of our dogs have experienced minimal socialization. As a result, there is often an adjustment period when learning about life as a family pet. We typically do not adopt to homes with children under 6 years old; homes with older children will be considered on an individual basis. Common skills such as house training and leash walking will often take a little extra time. Patience, understanding and a gentle hand are a must. The great news is, most of these dogs come around rather quickly and being a part of their rehabilitation is an extremely rewarding experience.
