Frida is a sweet little soul who is just beginning to discover the world around her. Like a little pup with a story still being written, she's learning that new places, new people, and new experiences can be exciting, even if they feel a little scary at first. This girl is looking for a patient family who will help guide her through life's adventures with kindness and understanding. Frida will need someone who can give her the time she needs to feel safe, build her confidence, and learn at her own pace. Every brave step forward, no matter how small, will be a moment worth celebrating.
Once Frida feels comfortable, her personality begins to shine. With a little encouragement and a lot of love, she has all the makings of a wonderful dog who will grow alongside her family.

IN-SHELTER NOTES & IDEAL HOME
SIZE:
38 lbs
HOME TYPE:
House or Townhouse- Frida would thrive in a calm home without shared entryways or busy hallways, as she can be nervous, sound sensitive and can be anxious.
CHILDREN:
No- Adult-only home, or possibly one with older, near-adult children. Frida is a very shy dog who needs a calm environment where her boundaries will be respected.
CATS & SMALL ANIMALS:
Yes- Cats potentially compatible with slow proper introduction.
OTHER DOGS:
Yes- Dogs potentially compatible.
ACTIVITY/ENERGY LEVEL:
Moderate to High; will need daily exercise, enrichment and mental stimulation but enjoys some daily down time as well.
HUMAN COMPATIBILTY:
Potentially compatible with a first-time dog owner, provided they are prepared to continue supporting Frida with some of her behavioural needs. She can be sensitive to sounds and nervous of new people/environments and would benefit from patient adopters who are committed to helping her build confidence and feel secure in her new home.
TRAINING REQUIREMENTS/NEEDS:
At least three in-person training session to work on socialization, basic training and manners and sound sensitivity.
HUMAN SOCIAL IN SHELTER:
Very human social. She is so friendly and sweet! She especially loves affection and pets once she feels comfortable.
FAVOURITE THINGS:
She enjoys treats and scratches!
FOSTER AND FIELD TRIP INSIDER INFO: (please note that dogs may behave different in foster's care than adopter's care and the following cannot be guaranteed)
HOUSE TRAINING:
Frida is house trained she will whine when needing to go out. She is very good about holding it until her walks and good at letting us know when she needs to go out.
CAR MANNERS:
Its a work in progress, Frida is still a little hesitant about getting into a car. We use treats to get her interested. Once she realizes there are treats she jumps in on her own. She has an easier time getting into the car when there is someone in the seat assuring her its safe to do so. Once in the car she is very good. She is not nervous or stressed at all. She likes to go from side to side in the back seat looking out both windows. It would be best to use a seatbelt.
LEASH MANNERS / ON WALK MANNERS:
Frida's leash training is a work in progress. We are currently trying to train her on heel walking with treats and loose leash walking with a treat lure. I find she is much better at loose walking on paths she is familiar with. When she goes down new routes of new areas she tends to pull more and sniff far more often as well. Frida is very interested in looking at other dogs but I find for the most part she just quietly watches other dogs walk by. She does not ever bark or growl at other dogs.
CRATE TRAINING:
Frida absolutely loves her crate, we leave the door wide open (except for when we both leave the house) and Frida loves to come and go in and out of her crate as she pleases. Its one of her favorite places to sleep right next to the couch of course. She loves her crate so much whenever we play with toys, she will take the toy and bring it into the crate and play with it by herself instead of with us. When we both leave the house we have no problem getting her in the crate she loves to go in. We give her extra treats to make her feel happy when we leave. Frida is working on her separation anxiety.
KNOWN TRAINING CUES:
Frida knows many of the basic commands. She knows sit and shake a paw. She is still learning and will only do them for treats. We are working on down, stand, and leave it. She always listens when we tell her to get off the couch when there is no room. We use YES and GOOD when Frida does what we want.
HUMAN SOCIAL:
Frida is very very good with adults. We have not gotten her to meet any children. At first she is a little shy and apprehensive about meeting people. She will approach people slow and with caution. Once she does meet them they become her best friend. There's a few people she knows from our building that she runs to greet whenever we see them on walks. Frida loves to jump up on people she likes, we are trying to train her to not do that.
TOYS:
Frida loves all of the toys I have given her so far with exception of the one toy with a squeaker, it kind of scares her a bit. Frida is a bit of a toy destroyer with her sharp and strong teeth she loves to rip and tear off any parts of the toy she can and try to eat them. She needs heavy duty todays and to be supervised when chewing on a toy that can break.
FOOD & TREATS:
Frida is highly food motivated and loves treats. She loves her normal kibble. We use it for light training. She salivates when its meal time. She cannot get enough of her food. She loves the beef liver we got her for more intensive training and bully sticks too!
