Sanja is a cat that needs time to warm up to a new place and a new people. Her trust is something that takes a lot of time, treats, and gentle persistence to earn.
The first weeks with me (her foster) she was a small and frightened animal, only coming out under the promise of food and that I would stay certain distances from her, NOT looking at her. We made progress slowly for awhile.
When she decided that she lived with me, that we were safe, she began turning into a strange, cheerful, sweet little cat. She talks a lot and greets every person in the house when they wake up with a morning honk and a demand to be pet on the head. Her favorite toys crinkle, but nothing is better than a straw wrapper and she zooms around the house with them in her mouth. Crinkle mice are a close second. If you take too long getting her food she will whap you- on the hand, arm, head, whatever she can reach really. Sanja isn't a lap cat and will only tolerate being lifted for a short time. She's a cat that likes to be near you, right next to you. You put a cat bed next to or better yet on your desk and that's her spot. If you're done petting her and she doesn't think so, she'll follow you around honking at you until you fix it.
But you have to take the time to earn it and respect her boundaries. She isn't a cat that does well with a loud household or overwhelming demands. Sanja has had a lot of time to learn to be afraid of people. You have to be the person patient enough to teach her that she doesn't have to be afraid of you.
