12/20/21 Introducing Chip!
Chip is a 3 - 4 year old black, 85 pound Great Dane/mix breed boy. This resilient boy experienced some rough times prior to being rescued and rehabilitated by a kind family in rural Iowa. Chip was found needing immediate medical attention and overall responsible care after being hit by a car. He had an injured leg and was emaciated and covered with fleas. Chip spent 6 months with this family who provided necessary veterinary care and a loving home to help him to recover and adjust to family living. They were unable to keep him as a permanent family member and surrendered him to our rescue several months ago. Both his rescuing and foster family describe him as an affectionate boy who loves people and children. He absolutely is an affectionate lap dog who also is energetic and loves adventures. Initially he is more receptive to women and children. He is submissive, playful and loves cuddling! Chip lived with 2 large breed dogs in his rescuing family and currently lives with 3 very small dogs in his foster home. He has done well with all the dogs. He has not lived with cats.

Chip is now recovered from is injury and former neglect and is healthy! He is neutered, up to date on all vaccinations and housebroken. He does have some arthritis in his left rear leg and receives a glucosamine supplement to help manage that. The arthritis does not slow him down and he continues to be active, fun loving and playful. He has a recurring anal gland issue that is managed by adding the supplement powder "No Scoot" to his diet. Chip has continued to be be fearful of the crate in both his original rescue and now foster home and has not been able to be crate trained. He does well with free roam as long as no food is left out. He has a bit of a talent as an escape artist and has been known to open doors with lever handles and will seize the opportunity to run out if a door is left open a crack. Outside he will run and chase cares if not safely confined so a physically fenced yard is required for his adoptive home. He walks great using a gentle leader. Foster family feels that Chip must have another dog companion in his adoptive home. While enjoying his human and dog companions to be around as much as possible, Chip has been able to tolerate being left alone alone up to 8 hours .

This sweet boy LOVES to be around his people as much as possible and the closer the better. He enjoys using people as pillows and is happy to cuddle up and listen to classical music or watch Scooby Doo. When not snuggling he enjoys active play, going for walks and car rides (especially if going to the DQ for a pup cup is part of the adventure).
