Meet Hickory! This 49-pound bundle of happiness is a playful, affectionate boy who has quickly made himself at home in his foster family's heart. He's the sweetest Velcro dog and wants nothing more than to be close to his people. Whether he's checking in to see what you're up to or curling up for a cuddle, Hickory is happiest when he's with his humans. He's a big fan of being part of the action and will gladly follow his favorite people around just to be near them!

This goofy boy has plenty of energy and loves having fun! His absolute favorite activity is playing fetch, and he's always happy to chase after a toy and bring the fun back for another round. He also enjoys his toys and romping around, but don't let his playful side fool you-Hickory knows how to settle down, too. Although he's energetic on walks, he's pretty calm inside the home once he's had a chance to burn off some of those wiggles. After playtime, he's more than happy to relax with his people and enjoy some affection.

Hickory is a smart boy who enjoys learning and is eager to please. He's been practicing his manners and has added some useful skills to his repertoire, including "crate," "drop," and "let go," which comes in handy during a game of fetch! He's food-motivated and responsive to his people, making training a great opportunity to bond with him. With consistency, positive reinforcement, and continued practice, Hickory has all the makings of a wonderful companion who will enjoy learning alongside his future family.

He's also making great progress with his housetraining. Since his foster family introduced a crate, he's stopped having accidents in the house. He does well when left alone and has been a terrific houseguest, never getting into things while his people are away. He's learning that home is a place where he can relax, and his foster family is happy with how well he's settling into his routine.

On walks, Hickory is still working on his leash manners, but he's making progress! He continues to pull some, though less than before, and can become reactive when he sees other dogs. His foster family has been working with him, and they've already noticed improvement. Hickory is attentive to his handler, which is a great starting point for continued training. He'll benefit from a family willing to keep practicing with him, provide appropriate outlets for his energy, and help him navigate exciting situations at a comfortable distance.

When it comes to meeting new people, Hickory may appreciate a thoughtful introduction, but he's showing that he can warm up nicely. This week, his foster family slowly introduced him to a male friend inside their home, and Hickory did very well! With a little time and a positive approach, he can make new friends and show off his sweet personality.

Hickory is still separated from his foster family's resident cat, so his compatibility with cats is currently unknown. When it comes to other dogs, he's met dogs at the shelter and can feel uncomfortable at first. He prefers gentle, respectful dog friends, and any potential canine roommates should meet him before adoption to make sure they're a good match. His ideal dog companion would be one who respects his space while he gets comfortable.

At home, Hickory's affectionate nature really shines. He's a devoted cuddlebug who loves being near his people and is happiest when he can share in whatever they're doing. He's the kind of dog who can bring plenty of laughter and playfulness to your day, then happily settle in for some quality time together. His foster family describes him simply as such a sweet boy, and it's easy to see why he's made such a special impression on them.

Hickory is a playful, loving, clever boy who's learning more every day. He has plenty of energy for walks, games of fetch, and adventures with his future family, but he also has a calmer side that makes him a lovely companion at home. With continued training, opportunities to play, and lots of affection, Hickory is ready to find a family who will appreciate his goofy personality and enjoy having this loyal little shadow by their side.

Hickory is currently in the comfort of a foster home. If you're interested in meeting him, please complete an application and email dogfosters@barcs.org for next steps!
