Barkley recently spent some time in a foster home, where his foster family got to know just how smart, curious, and engaging this handsome boy can be.
Barkley throws himself wholeheartedly into everything he does, whether he's exploring a hiking trail, learning new skills, playing with his favorite toys, or enthusiastically "arguing" with his people through his signature whines and vocal opinions. Life with Barkley is never boring-he brings excitement, humor, and enthusiasm everywhere he goes.
During his time in foster, Barkley showed that he thrives when both his body and mind stay busy. Hiking was one of his favorite activities, and he truly came alive outdoors where he could sniff, explore, and take in new experiences. He even enjoyed a beach adventure, bravely venturing into the water and showing plenty of curiosity about his surroundings. Like many dogs experiencing something completely new, all that excitement eventually became a bit overwhelming, but shorter outings and positive experiences helped him continue building confidence. Back at home, he was equally happy relaxing with his people, and his foster joked that one of his favorite ways to unwind was watching TV-especially Drake music videos.
Barkley is incredibly intelligent and loves learning. He already knows "sit" and "paw" and has worked on "down" and "rise." During his foster stay, his training plan helped improve both his leash skills and his confidence. He's still learning important skills like impulse control, settling calmly, and checking in with his handler when something worries him, but he's an eager student who genuinely enjoys learning and has tremendous potential with continued structure, consistency, and positive reinforcement.
Barkley also showed off some great home skills while in foster. He was fully crate trained and relaxed comfortably when left alone, happily snoozing until his foster family returned. As he was gradually given more freedom outside of his crate, he did have a few housetraining accidents, so his foster worked with him on recognizing potty cues and building consistency.
He also lived peacefully with a resident senior dog and showed a sweet ability to adjust his play style to match his older companion's needs. While he could occasionally get a little carried away-as many young dogs do-he was generally gentle and respectful with his canine housemate.
On walks, Barkley showed continued growth in his confidence. He often walked with a loose leash and enjoyed exploring alongside his person. Traffic, large vehicles, unfamiliar sights, and sudden noises could still make him uneasy. His foster found that he sometimes preferred relaxing in the backyard during busier daytime hours, while evening walks, when the world was a little quieter, were much more enjoyable for him.
Meeting new people is another area where Barkley continues to build confidence. He's a naturally sensitive dog who can become anxious in unfamiliar or especially busy situations, so he'll do best with patient adopters who understand that trust can take a little time. Predictable routines, positive experiences, and allowing him to move at his own pace can help this smart boy continue to blossom.
Although Barkley enjoys being close to his people, affection is often on his own terms. Rather than climbing into your lap, he's happy relaxing nearby with one of his favorite toys. He loves full-body rubdowns and quietly sharing space with the people he trusts. During his foster stay, he even developed the adorable habit of preferring to eat his meals with his family nearby instead of dining alone-a sweet reminder of how much his bonds with people can grow.
When it's time to play, Barkley has no shortage of favorites. Squeaky toys make him happy, and during his foster stay, a giant stuffed llama was a particular favorite. He's a great match for someone who enjoys staying active while also providing enrichment, training opportunities, and plenty of downtime together.
Because Barkley is a sensitive guy, certain unexpected sounds or movements can sometimes catch him off guard. Sneezes, coughs, sudden cheering during a sporting event, or other loud surprises may startle him while he figures out what's happening. Patient guidance and positive experiences can help him continue learning that everyday surprises aren't so scary.
At his core, Barkley is an incredibly engaging, intelligent, and spirited young dog who's looking for an adopter willing to continue investing in his growth. He'll thrive with someone who appreciates thoughtful, active dogs and understands that confidence-building is a journey. His foster described him as eager to learn and eager to please, with a wonderfully entertaining personality all his own.
