Meet Max - a lovable, smushy-faced gentleman with a huge heart, an adorable bottom-tooth smile, and a deep devotion to his people.

Max came to BARCS through no fault of his own and has quickly won over everyone he meets with his affectionate personality and desire to be part of the family. At 7 years young, he still has plenty of pep in his step, but if you ask Max, the best part of any day is simply spending time with the people he loves.

Currently thriving in a foster home, Max has proven himself to be a wonderful house companion. He is fully house-trained, has excellent manners indoors, and settles comfortably into a home routine. His foster describes him as a true velcro dog who loves following his people from room to room, always wanting to stay close and be involved in whatever they're doing. Whether he's lounging nearby while you work, napping on the couch, or supervising household chores, Max is happiest when he's with his humans.

Affection is one of Max's favorite things in the world. He absolutely adores snuggling and will happily climb onto a couch or bench to be closer to you. When meeting new people, his enthusiasm sometimes shines through in the form of a paw placed gently on a leg or an excited jump up to say hello, but his intentions are always loving. His foster recently welcomed a service professional into the home, and Max handled the visit beautifully, showing off his friendly, social personality and eagerness to make new friends.

Max is also a smart, food-motivated dog who enjoys learning new things. He already knows "sit" and is currently working on "wait" and "place" while continuing to improve his overall manners. His foster has been practicing focus exercises and rewarding him for checking in and staying engaged, and he has been making excellent progress. He enjoys enrichment activities and loves spending time with rope toys, Kongs, Nylabones, yak chews, and other special treats that keep his busy mind occupied.

One of Max's favorite activities is getting out and exploring with his people. He enjoys car rides and is always ready to be your co-pilot for any adventure. This week, he even enjoyed a trip to the beach and had a wonderful time taking in all the new sights and smells. On walks, Max continues to make impressive progress. He has become much more responsive on leash and has shown significant improvement around squirrels, often choosing to stay engaged with his handler rather than reacting. He has met other dogs at BARCS and can be uncomfortable. He requests to be the only dog in his forever home.

Max has shown that he can be trusted in the home and has excellent overall house manners. One area where he is still working hard is building confidence when left alone. Because he forms such strong bonds with his people, Max can experience stress when they leave. His foster has been working closely with BARCS' training team and recently implemented management strategies, including window coverings to reduce outside triggers. Max continues to practice short periods of alone time while building positive associations, and his foster is pleased with the progress they are making together. He would benefit from adopters who understand that separation-related stress takes patience, consistency, and support.

Despite this challenge, Max brings so much joy to the people around him. He is affectionate, devoted, eager to learn, and deeply connected to the people he loves. He wants to be included in daily life, whether that means joining you for a walk, riding along on errands, spending a day at the beach, or curling up beside you at the end of the day.

Max would likely do best as the only pet in his future home, where he can soak up all the attention and continue building confidence with his family. For someone looking for a loyal companion who wears his heart on his sleeve, loves to snuggle, and will happily be your shadow through every part of the day, Max may be the perfect match.

Max is currently living in a foster home. If you're interested in meeting this wonderful boy, please complete an application and email dogfosters@barcs.org for next steps.
