Monroe is an affectionate, friendly girl who loves both playtime and snuggles. She lived with children of all ages in her former home and did well (though she sometimes forgets her size when excited). Monroe is housebroken, can be crated, and at 8 years old and 53.6 pounds, she is already altered and ready to go home today.

Monroe spent some time in a short-term foster home where her sweet, affectionate personality is really started to shine. At home, Monroe is an absolute cuddlebug who wants nothing more than to be close to her people. She loves leaning into you for snuggles, resting her head on you for pets, and curling up nearby while you relax. Her foster said if she is not actively cuddling, she is usually watching her people with soft, friendly eyes or happily snoozing nearby - often with an adorable little snore and her nose tucked into blankets.

Monroe settled nicely into the home environment and did well with house training and relaxing independently. She sleeps peacefully in her crate when needed and lounges comfortably around the apartment while her foster is away for short periods.

She is food motivated, especially when chicken is involved, and is already learning skills like "sit," "down," "wait," and "up." Monroe enjoys rope toys and chew toys and loves spending time with her people both indoors and out.

Outside, Monroe can get excited on leash and is still working on her manners. She is enthusiastic on walks but she is making progress with positive reinforcement and continued training. Her future family should be prepared to continue helping her build confidence and leash skills while giving her plenty of love and structure.

Sweet Monroe has enjoyed a few Dog's Day Out adventures with volunteers and has been an affectionate and laid-back companion. She explored the trails at Patapsco State Park, easily logging 2 miles! She was calm on her hike and enjoyed stopping to roll in the grass and get belly rubs. She even waded bravely through chest deep water. She was a polite passenger in the car. She gently jumped in the backseat and immediately laid down, LOVES a rolled down window and calmly pokes her head out to smell all the smells. She seems to greatly enjoy a car ride without being overly excited! This adventurous girl has a cuddly side, too, and charmed everyone she met on a visit to a coffee shop.

Monroe has met other dogs at the shelter, and she can be a little pushy with her friends. She has interacted well with small dogs. She would prefer a home with no cats.

Monroe would thrive with adopters who appreciate a loyal shadow dog - one who wants to snuggle close, be part of your daily life, and shower you with affection. Monroe is currently in the comfort of a foster home. If you're interested in meeting her, please complete an application and email dogfosters@barcs.org for next steps.

I'm a VIP because I'm still learning, and the shelter can be a tough place for dogs like me to shine. But I've got a whole team cheering me on!

Here are a few things the staff and volunteers are helping me with:

· Practicing calm behavior when seeing pups on walks that excite or scare me
· Learning that the world isn't so scary

If you're patient and open-hearted, I could be your best friend. I'm available for adoption! During the adoption process, a staff member can walk you through what's been working for me and how you can keep the progress going at home.
