Meet Calhan (Poe)! At 8 years old, this handsome, 88-pound beefy boy is a total gentle giant with a heart as big as he is. Poe is all about taking life at his own pace. He enjoys slowly ambling along on his walks, taking his time to sniff and explore his surroundings, and then settling into whatever cozy spot he can find. He's an easygoing, affectionate gentleman who seems to have figured out that life is best enjoyed one leisurely moment at a time.
Poe is spending time in a foster home and has been an absolute dream of a houseguest. He's polite, respectful, and wonderfully well-mannered around the house. He's completely house-trained and has even learned to let his foster know when he needs to go outside by going to the door-and if his person isn't there, he'll bark to make sure the message gets through! He is also crate trained and does beautifully when left alone, with no messes, destruction, or other trouble. At night, he sleeps soundly and peacefully.
When he's not relaxing indoors, Poe loves being outside. He enjoys lounging in the sunshine, patrolling the yard for squirrels, and exploring his foster's garden. One of his favorite pastimes is wandering around to sniff all the flowers and plants, taking his time to investigate everything. He also enjoys playing with balls, rope toys, and chew toys. Despite his size, Poe has a wonderfully relaxed energy level and is just as happy spending a quiet afternoon outside as he is curling up indoors with his favorite person.
Poe is a serious snuggler and firmly believes that he is a lap dog. He follows his foster around the house and loves being close to his people. He especially lights up when someone talks to him in a sweet, baby-talk voice. He's affectionate, enjoys plenty of pets, and absolutely loves treats. Even when he's eating something delicious, Poe does everything at his own leisurely pace-he'll happily take his time chewing and savoring every bite. His foster has discovered that he particularly enjoys eggs, Greek yogurt, watermelon, and blueberries.
Poe is wonderful with people and has happily welcomed friends into his foster home. He's always excited to see visitors and enjoys meeting new people. He also recently attended a church dinner where he spent time around elementary-school-aged children, and he was fantastic with them. He happily played with the kids and handled the busy social setting like the gentle, good-natured guy he is. Whether he's meeting neighbors, visiting friends, or making new human acquaintances, Poe has consistently shown what a friendly and affectionate dog he can be.
Poe also has a wonderful relationship with his foster dog sister, Rousey. The two enjoy spending time together outside and have even developed a new favorite pastime of lying side by side in the sunshine. They also love playing chase until they're ready for a break. Poe has met other dogs at the shelter as well and does best with polite, gentle canine friends.
On leash, Poe may pull a little at the beginning of a walk because he's so excited to get outside, but he settles down quickly and returns to his preferred leisurely pace. Once he's settled, he is an easy walking companion who is happy to sniff and explore at his own speed. He's also a great passenger in the car and has even been a polite shopper during dog-friendly outings.
Poe knows "sit" and "stay," is wonderfully food motivated, and has proven to be incredibly easy to live with. His foster family continues to describe him as a great foster, and it's easy to see why. He's affectionate without being demanding, playful without being overwhelming, and perfectly content to spend his days enjoying the simple things-sunshine, snacks, leisurely walks, good company, and plenty of snuggles.
With his easygoing demeanor, gentle personality, and enormous capacity for affection, Calhan (Poe) is a lovable senior gentleman looking for someone who appreciates the slower, sweeter things in life.
