Doggy-Day-Out update: Onyx is a resident at AthensClarke County Animal Services. He took a break from the shelter and spent Saturday afternoon with me snoozing on the sofa, watching the first full weekend of college football on TV, and even stacking a bit of firewood. He was very well behaved and got along great with our dogs and cat.
He's been with me on several public outings and has always been very friendly and calm, even in the midst of loud music and lots of activity. Onyx doesn't seem to be a high energy dog, and is happy to be a buddy and stick close to his person. This boy is a wonderful companion and is just waiting for his perfect family.

Doggy-Day-Out update: I was in charge of Onyx and ushered him around as he met adults, kids, and other dogs. All greetings were friendly and appropriate as he met everyone with a friendly tail wag. Onyx is ready for his forever home where he can cozy up to his family.

Update: The more time I spend with Onyx, the more I love him. He really is a great dog who's sweet, affectionate, and easy to be with. Another volunteer has been working with him and taking Onyx for doggie-days-out, and he's done well meeting new people (including kids!) and being around other dogs. He's also learned how to take treats gently. I hope Onyx finds his forever family soon.

Doggy-Day-Out update: Onyx joined other pups from Athens-Clarke County Animal Services in a visit to the Marigold Market in Winterville. This was his first venture out of the shelter since arriving July 1 and he seemed to enjoy the outdoor environment and making new friends.

Update: Whenever I passed Onyx's gate, he'd wag his tail and try to stick his snout through the opening to let me know he was ready to come out and walk with me to an interaction pen. He was so happy when it was finally his turn. He wasn't interested in exploring or playing with toys; he just wanted to be with a friend. And when I offered him some treats, that was icing on the cake--he loves them! Onyx doesn't take treats gently, so I'd toss them to him. It became a game of catch, and he rarely missed. His former owner said Onyx lived as an indoor dog and is house trained and crate trained. He's good with other dogs and kids (he was around children up to four years old). He's a sweet boy who'd love a new buddy who'll take him for walks and play treat catch with him-maybe he can even learn to catch a ball!

Onyx is scared at the shelter and shut down; as a result, he is only available to licensed rescue groups at this time. Please email animalservices@accgov.com for more information about Onyx, including how to rescue him.
