Kane - Medical Hold
Yesterday, we received a call about a dog who had been hit by a car. His family simply couldn't manage the level of care he would need, so we stepped in. Then we learned he weighed just 5 tiny pounds.
Kane was incredibly lucky to have survived the accident, but when he arrived at the hospital, he was in very rough shape. He was in a comatose state, and the doctors offered a grave outlook. We knew the odds were stacked heavily against this little guy but we gave the go-ahead for diagnostics, hoping they would give us some answers. And they did.
Kane has suffered a significant head injury, a broken tail and a broken pelvis. Because of his neuro deficit at the time, it became a wait-and-see situation. The next several hours would tell us whether this little body had enough fight left in him. We knew making it through the night was far from guaranteed. But this morning... we got the call we were hoping for. Kane had improved. Greatly.
And this tiny little fighter was actually eating on his own.
But Kane still has a very long road ahead. He will need to remain in ICU for several days while his body stabilizes. Once he is strong enough, he will face major orthopedic surgery to repair his pelvis. And after that comes approximately 12 weeks of very limited movement, intensive care and a whole lot of patience.
