IN-SHELTER NOTES & IDEAL HOME

SIZE:
88 lbs

HOME TYPE:
House or Townhouse- Marjorie would thrive in a home without shared entryways or shared hallways, as she can be reactive and sometimes vocal.

CHILDREN:
Yes- Potentially compatible with near adult-aged children who have large dog experience.

CATS & SMALL ANIMALS:
Yes- Cats potentially compatible with slow proper introduction.

OTHER DOGS:
No- Marjorie has shown some reactivity both in the shelter and in her foster home, and would do best as the only dog in the household.

ACTIVITY/ENERGY LEVEL:
Moderate to High; will need daily exercise, enrichment and mental stimulation but enjoys some daily down time as well.

HUMAN COMPATIBILTY:
Potentially compatible for a first-time dog owner, provided they are willing to work on difficult behaviours such as reactivity and resource guarding.

TRAINING REQUIREMENTS/NEEDS:
At least one in-person training sessions to work on socialization, basic training and manners, reactivity and resource guarding.

HUMAN SOCIAL IN SHELTER:
Very human social. She is so friendly and sweet! She loves affection and pets.

FAVOURITE THINGS:
She enjoys treats and scratches!

FOSTER AND FIELD TRIP INSIDER INFO: (please note that dogs may behave different in foster's care than adopter's care and the following cannot be guaranteed)

HOUSE TRAINING:
Marjorie is house trained. She has a routine of going out about every 3-4 hours!

CAR MANNERS:
She travels very well in the car! When secured with her doggy seatbelt attached to her harness, she calmly sits or lies down and enjoys the ride. She may occasionally bark at large buses or trucks as they pass by.

LEASH MANNERS / ON WALK MANNERS:
She is very lovely on walks, she does not pull the leash at all! She is calm with humans passing by, but gets excited when other dogs are seen nearby or pass by. She also sometimes eats food she finds if they are on the sidewalk.

CRATE TRAINING:
Margorie is great with the crate, she sleeps and eats in the crate and has no problems whatsoever!

KNOWN TRAINING CUES:
Margorie knows sit, down/lie down, paw, leave it (most of the time only for treats), kiss and come.

HUMAN SOCIAL:
She is very friendly with everyone! She loves pets and to greet people.

TOYS:
She loves to play with her toys, especially to chew them and try to rip them apart. She does sometimes resource guard her toys.

FOOD & TREATS:
She is highly food motivated and absolutely loves her treats, which can be a great asset for training. She does show some resource guarding around her food, so it's best to give her space while she eats and allow her to finish undisturbed. She's also quite the little scavenger and will happily go after human food if given the chance; even checking the trash or recycling, so keeping those items out of reach will be important.

For more information on any behaviours stated above, please check out our behaviour fact sheet: https://kwsphumane.ca/BehavioursandDefinitions

At HSKWSP we do not assign our dogs or cats with a breed as we cannot guarantee the specific breed that they are. All dogs are labelled as small, medium and large breed and cats are labelled as DSH, DMH and DLH based on their characteristics.

***NOTE*** Please remember that animals are coming back from foster care to the centres for their meet and greets. They will be experiencing a new environment and meeting new people, which means they may not exhibit the same behaviours they did in their foster videos or while in foster care.
