At BCSPCA, we have learned to love and live the idea that it takes a village. Few animals demonstrate this as well as Olivia. She came to us months ago as a stray. Her microchip revealed a past that started in the south and bounced from home to home. Unfortunately, we were unable to find her former owners. Her fear in the shelter was off the charts. Determined staff and volunteers made small breakthroughs, but we knew she needed a different environment. Thankfully, one of our amazing foster families stepped forward to see how Olivia would do in their home. Given the severity of her anxiety, our behavior and medical teams collaborated with a Behavioral Medicine Clinician to evaluate Olivia and come up with a plan to prepare her for adoption success, including medicine to help manage her anxiety. In general, she is more at ease with women than men, but strangers tend to be scary for her. Thanks to her dedicated foster family and their understanding friends and neighbors (who agreed to be low-key "treat dispensers" whenever greeting our girl), Olivia has come a long way. She has an incredibly strong bond with her foster mom (it is heart-melting to see Olivia light up in her presence) and a ton of patience and hard work are helping her grow more and more comfortable with the men in her home. She lives with a dog and cat and has made friends with many more dogs on her morning hikes, which she loves, loves, loves! She is house trained and crate trained. Olivia is a special girl who deserves a special home. She has thrived in a quiet environment with adults who accept her fears and anxieties, don't judge her for needing medicine and are willing to move at her pace. We feel Olivia would be overwhelmed by children (and children would be frustrated by her conditional love). Pets are a plus and her foster mom recommends a fenced in yard may make everyone happier! If you are inspired by the idea of joining Olivia's village, please give us a call at 267-347-4674. She will be staying in foster until we find you.
