Do you have a minute? Bruno's story of survival is a long one but it's well worth the time.

After surviving Hurricane Harvey, Bruno found himself in a disaster shelter in Texas. This handsome blond guy was big and strong, labeled as dog aggressive he required two handlers to walk him. Furry Friends knew that there weren't many rescues willing to take pits, especially a large pit labeled as dog aggressive. We decided Bruno was going to be in our first transport of dogs - upon arriving at Furry Friends we did his initial vet care and confirmed that he was heartworm positive. We started Bruno on a course of antibiotics to start killing the heartworms and Bruno started stealing our hearts. This big, goofy guy didn't know what to make of the other dogs in the shelter but he definitely loved his human caretakers and we loved him right back. While he's been with us he's had the opportunity to interact with and experience other dogs - while he doesn't love every dog he's not aggressive - merely selective about who earns his affections.

After 30 days of antibiotics Bruno received two injections near his spine to kill the remaining heartworms. Even with painkillers the treatment proved very painful for Bruno and we spent many hours sitting with him in his kennel stroking his head and comforting him. Crate rest was hard on Bruno, he went from being a super active, busy guy to having to be still and calm. He dropped a lot of muscle mass very quickly which increased the challenges he was having with pain. Our medical team worked out a plan to help Bruno balance his pain and activity level so he could start working on building his muscles back up. His walk is a little goofy but he's back to being a happy, active boy. His favorite times are when he gets to hang out with his people, whether it's on a walk, sitting with a volunteer in his kennel, or helping our staff with paperwork in the office after the shelter closes.

Bruno spent quite a while in a home before coming back into the shelter through no fault of his own. Although we healed his heartworms his heart needs something else now - a family of his own to love. If you're ready to be the happy ending to Bruno's epic tale come meet him at our West Des Moines shelter today.
