Special Needs
Gibbs is a special needs pup with a medical condition called Mega Esophagus. The muscle doesn't function properly to move food and water down his throat. Gibbs currently eats three small meals a day. He is also on a liquid diet and has to sit up for 10 minutes after he eats so that gravity can help bring his food and water down to his stomach. His condition is untreatable, but is manageable. It is best to walk him with a harness. He is learning not to pull on leash and other basic commands. When he has his training sessions, his foster mom does not use treats unless it's a syringe of his liquid food. Normally his reward is a toy or verbal praise and affection. Gibbs is a vocal pup and will let you know that he wants to be a part of whatever activity that you are doing. He is not a fan of storms. When a storm comes, his foster mom gets him involved by playing with a toy or another dog to take his mind off of it. After some fun playing, he will sleep right thru all of the rain, thunder, and lightning. He is not a fan of water, but does like to put his paws in the water. Gibbs does have some rough mornings when he wakes up depending on the position that he is sleeping. He has shown improvement when he has his head in an elevated position. Gibbs is very well socialized with both people and other animals. Gibbs weighs around 25 pounds as of late July, and will likely grow to weigh around 60 pounds when full grown. We are looking for a very special person or family to open their heart and home to Gibbs. If you feel that Gibbs would be an excellent addition to your family, please submit an adoption application online, or contact us at adopt@barkva.org.
