Do you have room in your home and your heart for a sweet, gentle, small, senior gal to spend her golden years? Do you find joy in the small moments? Do you have the confidence and patience to know that a scared dog might need time to trust you? If so, then you may be Opal's angel!
Opal is a 10-year-old, ex-puppy mill mama who spent 8 years locked in a cage with ZERO affection. This darling girl came to me for foster quite some time ago now, terrified and shut down, but has made great strides in learning that a good life comes with love, affection, attention, good food, a soft bed, and no cages. From lying stiff and whale-eyed in a corner of the room (literally not moving for hours on end) for months and months to now jumping up on the sofa and climbing into my lap, Opal's time in foster has allowed for life-changing emotional rehabilitation and her little world has grown monumentally! She gets the zoomies in the yard, she follows me around the house, and her favorite spot is on my lap. Does she still get scared and run away from me sometimes? Yes, at least once a day - sometimes 20 times a day. Does she still cower as I approach? Yes, and it can be heartbreaking, but most of the time, once I've stopped moving about, she prefers to be close and snuggled up! She even gives the sweetest little kisses while being pet.
Opal enjoys the company of other dogs, and her ideal home has another friendly dog for her to follow and find comfort in. She is perfectly fine and gentle with cats, though their quick, unpredictable movements seem to make her uncomfortable- I'm sure she'd prefer a home without them, haha. Opal's forever home MUST have a fully fenced-in yard for safety - this little lady does not trust the world around her nearly enough to safely be on a leash outside of a fully fenced space. A home without small children is best as they would only add to her anxiety.
Opal's forever person/people will celebrate the small wins of affection and be understanding of the time and space those wins will need to take place. If you are looking for a dog to take on walks and be out and about socializing with, Opal isn't your gal. She is an introvert through and through, lol. She is a gentle, soulful, and loving dog; she will give someone who is willing to take a chance on a timid, senior lady more purpose and fulfillment than I can possibly explain. Again, it will take patience and time to gain her trust, but sometimes that's what rescue is all about.
